Oregon’s manufacturing sector is growing more quickly than the nation’s as a whole; over 21% of our states gross state product is in manufacturing. That’s a big part of our state’s economy. The sector provides many jobs throughout the state and is a hub for research and innovation.

So who is considered a manufacturer? According to the State of Oregon Employment Department: “The Manufacturing sector comprises establishments engaged in the mechanical, physical, or chemical transformation of materials, substances, or components into new products. Establishments in the Manufacturing sector are often described as plants, factories, or mills and characteristically use power-driven machine sand materials-handling equipment. However, establishments that transform materials or substances into new products by hand or in the worker’s home and those engaged in selling to the general public products made on the same premises from which they are sold, such as bakeries, candy stories, and custom tailors, may also be included in this sector. Manufacturing establishments may process materials or may contract with other establishments to process their materials for them. Both types of establishments are included in Manufacturing.”

October is the month we at the Chamber specifically celebrate the Manufacturing industry, being the month where Manufacturing Day occurs. In partnership with regional partners including Oregon Manufacturing Extension Partnership (OMEP), Connected Lane County, Food and Beverage Strategist Micha Elconin, Eugene Chamber of Commerce, and others,  Manufacturing Day brings together students from around Lane county and gives them an opportunity to tour food production and wood products manufacturing companies. The tours expose students to the production processes, machines, and people that make some of the area’s finest products. Students will be onsite and will learn firsthand about manufacturing in Lane County, career opportunities, and desired skills.

This month’s theme of the Bottom Line is “Manufacturing Today”. We have a great lineup of articles that highlight Oregon’s timber manufacturing industry, advanced technology, Chamber Insurance options, and more!
