The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to welcome the American Cancer Society (ACS) as a new member. For more than a century, ACS has been at the forefront of the fight against cancer, funding groundbreaking research, supporting patients and their families, and advocating for lifesaving policies. The Chamber recently spoke with Kristen Salladay, Senior Development Manager, to learn more about ACS’s mission, local impact, and how the Springfield business community can get involved in creating a world without cancer.

Tell us a little about American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society is a leading cancer-fighting organization with a vision to end cancer as we know it, for everyone. We are improving the lives of people with cancer and their families as the only organization combating cancer through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure that everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.

How did you get started in your industry?
I started my journey with ACS as a team Captain for Relay For Life of Eugene-Springfield right after I lost my dad in 2007 to colon cancer. I later joined the Relay committee as a volunteer for several years, ultimately applying for a job with ACS! I will be celebrating my 14 year anniversary as an ACS Staff this May.

What services do you offer and what makes American Cancer Society unique?
There are so many great services to list: 24/7 Cancer helpline: 1-800-227-2345, Lodging during treatment, Navigation Support, Rides to treatment, Connecting Cancer Survivors, Clinical Trials Matching Service, Breast Cancer Support, our website Cancer.org, and Hair Loss and Post Surgical Products.

What do you like most about your work?
The people I meet and all of the amazing volunteers our community!

Any advice for others?
Get screened! The best defense against cancer is finding it early.

Anything else you’d like to share?
I manage two amazing fundraisers in our community. The Relay For Life of Eugene-Springfield (ranked #4 nationwide) and Men Wear Pink of Lane County (ranked #8 nationwide). Anyone is welcome to contact me for more information on both of these campaigns: via email kristen.salladay@cancer.org or call 541-517-8939.
