Wilvet South is a new, 24-hour emergency care veterinary hospital, opened in Springfield in November, 2022. They are available around the clock with experienced and highly trained veterinary staff to provide high-quality and compassionate care for pets of all kinds. To welcome Wilvet South to Springfield, we recently talked with Maribel Martinez, Practice Manager, to find out more about the team, the services, and the organization.

Tell us a little about Wilvet South.
You can’t really know something unless you know about its history. A group of individuals from Willamette Veterinary Hospital in Corvallis recognized the need Eugene and Springfield had for another emergency care facility for pets. We were seeing patients as far south as Roseburg! We already had the experience of running a 24-hour clinic with proven quality in patient care and service. Together, Drs. Erica Harmon, Laura Bennett, Dan Lewer, Emily Kalenius, and Practice Manager Maribel Martinez opened Wilvet South. Our goal is for all pet parents to have a local, convenient access to emergency care, 24/7.

What should the community know about the services you provide?
We are here to supplement the general practice veterinarians in the area. We provide emergency and urgent care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. General practices can refer patients needing surgery, intensive care, ultrasound and endoscopy. Since we’re here 24/7, if you’re a member of the community and your pet needs urgent attention, we’re here to help.

Where and how did you get started in providing emergency pet care?
The team of individuals who own and operate Wilvet South have practiced in the Willamette Valley for over a decade. I began my career in veterinary medicine in 2006, becoming a certified veterinary technician and most recently a certified veterinary practice manager. I’m happy to be realizing my career goals and aspirations in the community of Springfield.

What makes Wilvet South unique?
One of our visions is to strengthen the connection between society and the veterinary profession. We’re focusing on the experience of emergency care. Often times, urgent situations are rushed – cold and stressful. At Wilvet South, we want to take the time educating clients and helping them understand their pets’ situations and the options available to them. We try to maintain a stress-free experience, from our staff’s hospitality to the lobby décor. Hopefully people will be able to have more positive experiences with their pets, elevating their standards of veterinary care.

Do you have any advice for others?
For pet parents everywhere, I would say peace of mind is priceless. If you see your pet doing anything out of the normal, schedule an appt with your vet or come into the emergency room. If all turns out OK, you’re at least not up in the middle of the night scared and concerned, imagining the worst. We’re here to help!
