Lunchvox LIVE Recap: Reworking Career Pathways

The idea that a working professional’s career path is set by the age of 30 is long gone. Workforce and employment data suggests that regardless of age, education, or training, workers across all industry sectors are exploring new careers or seeking continuing education to further career advancement opportunities. It’s more important than ever that employers understand and adapt to these ever-evolving workforce dynamics.

On Friday, December 9th, during our final LunchVox program of the 2022 series, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce hosted more than 40 attendees, both online and in person, for a presentation on and examination of the local implications of reworking career pathways and how Bushnell University is responding through redesigned career advancement training and education pathways.

We welcomed Dr. Corynn Gilbert, Director of Development at Bushnell University, as our featured speaker of the program. Dr. Gilbert provided an overview of the changing workforce, competencies for career readiness, and strategies for business leaders to empower personnel.

Dr. Gilbert challenged attendees’ preconceptions of the “traditional” career journey of a continuous upward trajectory, sharing that modern workers are experiencing numerous transitions, and are continuing their education well beyond their 20s and 30s. Using this new methodology, Dr. Gilbert shared how Bushnell University continues to reshape hiring methods, career development, and learning for their own staff, as well as create new programs for students based on community and workforce needs.

“The reality of the career process – and this is fundamental to understanding ourselves as employees as well as future employees on our teams – is that there is no straight line … we need to honor that this is the reality of our work lives and our workforce.”

Throughout the presentation and during the Q&A session that followed, the audience was engaged, asking thought-provoking questions about how this topic relates to them, personally, and expressing how they have witnessed these reimagined career pathways in their own lines of work or in the broader community.
