When Oregon’s phase reopening guidelines were revised just before Phase 2 began in Lane County, Travel Lane County needed to pivot to a different strategy to drive demand safely.

Leveraging a staycations strategy, Travel Lane County is focused on encouraging locals with pent-up travel demand to stay local. It’s the safest travel option for them and supports the local economy. In partnership with the Turell Group we have created campaign assets that will be a perfect fit for this effort, and for our expansion into drive markets as appropriate in the future. These pieces hinge on an “in this moment” theme that aligns with themes like family travel, local exploration and relaxation in these tense times.

We know others are traveling, so our second priority is to provide information to keep those traveling into our destination as safe as possible – for the traveler and for the businesses they frequent. And while we have great product aligning with national sentiment showing Americans searching for the outdoors, we are also working to drive appropriate visitation into urban centers. Our leisure priority continues to be drive demand safely, for the protection of our Lane County residents and of our industry beyond and throughout this crisis.

Sentiment Improvement Continues

Americans are wanting to visit family, avoid crowds and enjoy the outdoors as they feel better about travel during the pandemic. A survey of Travel Lane County website visitors indicates 75% of potential visitors were planning for a trip that wasn’t previously postponed/rescheduled, 41% were planning an August or September trip, outdoor recreation information is overwhelmingly the #1 information they are looking for and for local residents over two-thirds were likely or extremely likely to plan a staycation.

  • Americans’ optimism about the pandemic improving grew this past week. Nearly one in five feel the pandemic will be resolved before the conclusion of 2020.
  • Three-quarters of American travelers continue to report that they at least have tentative leisure trip plans in the next 16 months, although leisure air travel still looks to take until at least 2021 until Americans are back to pre-pandemic comfort levels.
  • For the remainder of 2020, approximately one-third of American travelers have at least tentative trip plans.
