During its May 19 work session, the Springfield City Council received the final report from the Mayor’s Fiscal Stability Task Force, a Technical Advisory Committee formed to help address Springfield’s growing budget gap and long-term fiscal challenges.

The Task Force, convened in January by Mayor Sean VanGordon, included 12 members from business, education, nonprofit, and civic sectors, including the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Vonnie Mikkelsen. Over nine weeks, the group examined City’s finances and developed nine recommendations aimed at sustaining essential public services.

“Springfield has never been a community that backs down from tough challenges,” said Mayor VanGordon. “This report is not just about numbers – it’s about what kind of future we want for our community. The Task Force brought thoughtful, practical, community-driven priorities to the table, and we owe them our thanks.”

Key recommendations include adjusting public safety levies, evaluating a payroll tax, reassessing administrative cost allocations, reducing library service levels, and pursuing targeted economic development strategies.

Next Steps
Council will continue discussions at a work session on June 30. While the May 19 and June 30 sessions are open to the public, no public comment will be taken. These sessions allow Council to review details and prepare for future decision-making and community engagement.
