Springfield Chamber Joins Coalition Advocating for Energy Choice
The City of Eugene is considering a ban on natural gas and other fossil fuel infrastructure in newly constructed buildings. Businesses report grave concerns that such policy will limit their ability to operate locally or remain competitive in other markets.
In light of this, the Springfield Chamber has joined a concerned group of workers and organizations who want to make sure your voice is heard. Our coalition believes there’s a better path forward – one that includes partnership on all renewables including renewable natural gas and hydrogen and that energy choice creates more affordability and reliability for all – even when the power is out.
We invite our members to learn more at the coalition web page and to lend your name to the growing list of individuals and organizations who share our concern. Please share this link with others who are interested in being a voice for energy choice:
The Eugene and Springfield Chambers of Commerce survey measured business community sentiment on these issues and the impacts such policies could have on local organizations, jobs, and families. Over 235 members responded.
Key highlights include:
- 79% of respondents representing commercial businesses do not support a ban on natural gas infrastructure in new homes and 82% do not support a ban on natural gas in commercial and industrial buildings.
- Over 40 local businesses, representing as many as 1,000 jobs, noted they would relocate their business if a ban went into place.
- Over 90% of respondents shared they believe a decision on the prohibition of natural gas in new homes and commercial buildings should be left to voters, not the Eugene City Council.
The Chambers hope these results shed light on important implications for decision makers and will shape any future city outreach efforts moving forward.
