The Springfield/Eugene region is an amazing place to live and raise a family as it has a long history of valuing the wellbeing of our communities. While there is a strong foundation, a great many opportunities exist in lifestyle habits that can enhance longevity and vitality.

That’s why I’m energized about what the Blue Zones Project® can bring to our communities. Inspired by the world’s longest-living people, Blue Zones Project is an initiative designed to unite our communities behind a common goal: transforming to make healthy choices easier – places to walk and bike outdoors, best food options and  purpose in life. All of which can lead to happiness and add life to your years.

It’s important to point out that studies have shown approximately 80% of our health is determined by our environment – only 20% is genetic. So, there’s lots of opportunity for us to shape our environment in ways that benefit us .

Blue Zones Project is a community-led well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier through a combination of personal and community change. Established in 2010, Blue Zones Project is inspired by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow and New York Times best-selling author who identified five regions of the world—or Blue Zones®—with the highest concentration of people living to 100 years or older. Blue Zones Project incorporates Buettner’s findings and works with cities to implement policies and programs that will move a community toward optimal health and well-being.

Currently, 42 communities in nine states have joined Blue Zones Project, impacting more than 3 million Americans nationwide including four communities in Oregon.

Join us to learn more at the Blue Zones Project Presentation, Wine @ 5 event or share your expertise during a Focus Group from Feb. 4-5. Visit https://go.bluezonesproject.com/springfield-eugene to learn more and RSVP. During these two days, experts from Blue Zones Project will be on an active site visit to determine the readiness of our communities for the program. The motivation, readiness and leadership of the community will be considered.

If the Blue Zone assessment finds the Springfield/Eugene region to be ready for this community transformation initiative and funding is secured, community members, schools, businesses, grocery stores, restaurants and other organizations would be given the opportunity to get involved with Blue Zones Project programs and offerings.

I want to say “thank you” to the visionary leaders of our communities who have already supported the effort to bring the Project to Springfield and Eugene, including the mayors and chambers of commerce leaders for these beloved cities.

It’s an exciting time as we embrace this unique opportunity to transform the way we view health and well-being in our region today and for generations to come.
