Artist Talk with Photographer Fernando Angel Soto Vidal
Presented by Maude Kerns Art Center
Thursday, October 31, from 12 – 1 pm
On Thursday, October 31, from 12:00 – 1:00 pm, Mexican photographer Fernando Angel Soto Vidal, who exhibits eight of his photographs in this year’s Día de los Muertos Exhibit, speaks about his work. His talk, entitled “Day of the Dead: Expressions of Popular Culture in Morelos, Mexico, especially in Coatetelco,” highlights the disappearing practice of Día de los Muertos hanging altars. According to one oral tradition, it is said that the dead have no feet and float. To accommodate them on their return to the land of the living, the altars are elevated.
A prize-winning photojournalist, Fernando has shown his work in 100 group exhibitions and has had more than 30 solo shows in both Mexico and abroad. His talk is free to the public with a suggested donation.
The Maude Kerns Art Center, located at 1910 E. 15th Avenue at the corner of 15th and Villard, is Eugene’s first non-profit community center for the visual arts. Gallery hours are from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday – Friday, and noon to 4:00 pm on Saturday when exhibits are on display.
