Opening Reception: Friday, January 10, 6:00 – 8:00 pm

The Maude Kerns Art Center presents the first exhibit of the new season, “Conversations: Reflections of 14 Women Artists,” featuring the work of Out of the Woodwork, a guild of professional women artists, opening with a public reception on Friday, January 10, from 6 – 8 pm. “Conversations” is dedicated to and includes the work of Beverly Soasey (1950 – 2018), an influential member of the guild since it first began meeting in 2014.

“Conversations” includes the work of Dee Etzwiler, Hannah Goldrich, Jenny Gray, Heather Halpern, Ann Bumb Hamilton, Rogene Mañas, Rebecca Mannheimer, Tylar Merrill, Satoko Motouji, Sally Schwader, Sarah Sedwick, Beverly Soasey, Marijo Taylor, and Marjorie Taylor. Although the artist members of the guild work in a variety of mediums and styles, they are united in the pursuit of excellence, encouraging each other to explore and experiment creatively.

A distinctive feature of “Conversations” is a special installation of a table set for 14 people, representing all the artists in the show. The table also symbolizes the monthly meetings of the guild. Each setting includes a placemat and a white plate with tools used by the individual artist represented. The table settings illuminate the diversity of the artwork, which ranges from paintings and prints to jewelry, “vegan taxidermy,” digital art, and fiber art. The table’s centerpiece consists of dried branches.  Woven through the branches is a band of paper covered with words that relate to the conversations and relationships shared by the guild artists.

The public is invited to an Artists’ Talk about “Conversations” on Saturday, February 1, from 1:00 – 2:30 pm.

The Maude Kerns Art Center, located at 1910 E. 15th Avenue at the corner of 15th and Villard, is Eugene’s first non-profit community center for the visual arts. Gallery hours are from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday – Friday, and noon to

4:00 pm on Saturday when exhibits are on display. For more information about “Conversations: Reflections of 14 Women Artists,” contact the Art Center at 541-345-1571 or visit www.mkartcenter.org.
