Applicants Sought for Springfield Ward 5 Council Seat

The Springfield City Council is accepting applications to fill an interim vacancy for the Ward 5 Council position. The selected applicant will serve through December 31, 2026.

Community members who live in Ward 5 and are interested in this opportunity must apply by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 8, 2025.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Live in Ward 5
  • Be a registered voter
  • Not be a current City of Springfield employee
  • Not be a candidate for more than one elective City office
  • Disclose any adult felony convictions

The interim Councilor will serve through December 31, 2026. The position will be up for election during the May 2026 primary, with the elected Councilor beginning a four-year term in January 2027.

Interim Councilor Recruitment Schedule

  • September 8, 2025: Council approves process at public hearing
  • September 9 – October 8, 2025: Recruitment and outreach period
  • October 8, 2025: Applications due by 5:00 p.m. to City Manager’s Office
  • October 13, 2025: Council finalizes interview process
  • October 20, 2025: Council conducts interviews and appoints Interim Councilor Elect
  • October 27, 2025: Formal appointment of Interim Councilor

About the Springfield City Council
Springfield’s Mayor and six Councilors make up the City’s legislative body. These volunteers serve four-year terms, setting policy, passing ordinances and resolutions, authorizing contracts, adopting the City’s budget, and appointing the City Manager, City Attorney, and advisory board members.

Council members also represent the City on various boards and commissions and participate in community events throughout the year.

Council meetings
City Council meetings are open to the public and follow Oregon’s Public Meetings law (ORS Chapter 192).

Meetings are typically held at Springfield City Hall as follows:

  • Work Sessions: 2nd and 4th Mondays at 5:30 p.m. (with additional sessions as needed on 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6:00 p.m.)
  • Regular Meetings: 1st and 3rd Mondays at 7:00 p.m. (moved to the next business day if a holiday falls on a Monday)

Council usually recesses for Spring Break, and during summer and winter holidays.
