Springfilm Celebrates Black History Month
Watch party of ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ and online discussion.
Join Springfilm for a live watch party and discussion of ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, February 18. Henrietta Lacks was an African-American woman whose cervical cancer cells, harvested without her knowledge or consent in 1951, are the source of the HeLa line – an important source of medical data to this day. The film tells the story of Henrietta’s daughter, Deborah Lacks’ (Oprah Winfrey) quest to discover more about her mother and the life-saving medical breakthroughs that came from the HeLa line. Deborah was aided by journalist Rebecca Skloot (Rose Byrne), who wrote the best-selling book of the same name that brought the story to public attention. Following the film attendees can take part in a fun, lively discussion.
If you don’t want to join the watch party ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’ can be seen right now on the library’s streaming video service Access Video On Demand (AVOD): https://avod.infobase.com/PortalPlaylists.aspx?wID=107094&xtid=189941 or join the ZOOM Live Stream at the link below.
