The 2020 member survey returned honest results of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce’s members, with response rate slightly down to 87 members (98 in 2019).

Similarly to 2019, the results covered a wide range of businesses, with a fairly equal spread of responses from businesses of 5 or fewer employees (32%), to businesses with over 50 employees (30%).

Also remaining on trend for a typical year, most responses came from long term members. 30 percent of those surveyed have been members for over 10 years, while an additional 17 percent of respondents have been members for at least 6 years.

There was lower representation from new members in the survey this year, with only 18% of respondents having been chamber members for less than 2 years, as compared to 30% of respondents in 2019.

Most responses were positive, with the chamber receiving an average overall rating of 88 out of 100 – this is a three-point increase from the 85 overall rating scored in 2019 and 2018. Additionally, over 60 percent of respondents rated the chamber at a 90 or higher.

In response to the question ‘Would you recommend Chamber membership to a friend?’ over 70 percent were “promoters” (responded with a 9 or 10).

Another trend that has emerged through the past 3 surveys is connections to other businesses being selected as the most common reason to be a Chamber member, with 70% of all respondents indicating this once again.

Business exposure was the second most commonly selected reason for joining. Notably in a year such as 2020 ‘to make a difference in the community’ and ‘civic responsibility’ were the third and fourth most common reasons for belonging.
