SPRINGFIELD – Willamalane Park and Recreation District recently welcomed Jase Newton as Recreation Services Director. In this role, Newton oversees the operations of Willamalane Park Swim Center, Splash! At Lively Park, Bob Keefer Center for Sports and Recreation, Willamalane Adult Activity Center, early childhood and youth programs, district rentals, and all recreation events and programs.

Newton has worked in park and recreation organizations throughout his career, starting at Willamalane in the recreation department he now oversees. He held many positions at the district while he was a student at the University of Oregon, including youth program leader, front desk attendant, and parks maintenance roles. After graduating from University of Oregon, Newton continued pursuing his passion for parks and recreation at Peninsula Metropolitan Park District in Gig Harbor, Wash. Most recently, he held the position of Superintendent at River Road Park and Recreation District in Eugene.

“In the big picture, I always imagined in some form coming back to Willamalane,” Newton said about his return. “There’s a culture here that is welcoming, and it is important that we continue  developing that culture with both staff and patrons throughout the district.”

Newton takes over the lead position for this division in challenging times, but he is up to the task. He has already jumped right into leading the division through major programming changes including the statewide two-week freeze and new COVID-19 restrictions for most program areas.

“I’m looking forward to developing programs and events that our community needs now and will need in the future. Our team will continue to provide outstanding programming for everyone to enjoy,, and no matter what issues we face, we will remain committed to our mission,” Newton said.
