SUB Recognized for Reliable Electric Service to the Community
Springfield Utility Board has received national recognition for achieving exceptional electric reliability in 2023. The recognition comes from the American Public Power Association (APPA), a trade group that represents more than 2,000 not-for-profit, community-owned electric utilities.
APPA helps electric utilities track power outage and restoration data through its independent tracking service. Once per year, APPA compares this data to national statistics tracked by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all types of electric utilities.
“The remarkable reliability record is a testament to the hard work of all our staff to keep Springfield powered.”
– Jeff Nelson, General Manager, Springfield Utility Board
“I am a longtime advocate of measuring our performance against industry benchmarks,” said SUB General Manager Jeff Nelson. “SUB provided our data, and we did very well, earning a certificate of excellence for ranking among the top 25% of utilities using the tracking service.”
Data for this certification period covers reliability data for 2023. The statistics don’t include data from outages caused by “major events,” which this program defines as events exceeding the reasonable design or operational limits of an electric system.
“It’s encouraging to see that public power’s track record for providing highly reliable service is backed by data,” said APPA Director of Research and Development Paul Zummo. “These utilities are the best of the best when it comes to keeping the lights on. And these communities should be proud of their local power providers and appreciate the hard work that goes into earning this recognition.”
Nationwide, the average public power customer is without power for less than half the time than customers of other utilities types.
