Nova Health to Host Blood Drive at Springfield Urgent Care Clinic
Submitted by Brandy Hamar, Nova Health
On Thursday, September 19, Nova Health will host a Blood Drive at its urgent care clinic, located at 445 Harlow Road, Springfield, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The goal of the blood drive is to support the nation’s current blood supply shortage and help bolster the regional supply of lifesaving blood, plasma, and platelets to help save lives in the community.
Bloodworks Northwest will support the event with its onsite bloodmobile. At approximately 40 feet long, the bloodmobile can accommodate about 50 donors throughout the course of an event. Bloodworks Northwest is an independent, non-profit organization harnessing donor gifts to provide a safe, lifesaving blood supply to more than 90 Northwest hospitals.
Mix 94.5 FM will also support the Nova Health Blood Drive. Representatives from the station will be onsite at the Springfield clinic for two hours, helping to spread the word about the event and offering giveaways to participants. Nova Health will also donate a $250 Visa gift card to one lucky winner whose blood donation will help to save up to three lives.
The Constant High Demand and Low Supply of Blood in Our Nation
Every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood. A single, one-pint blood donation can save up to three lives, as donations are used for surgeries, cancer treatment, chronic illnesses, and traumatic injuries. Whether a patient needs whole blood, red cells, platelets or plasma, their wellness, and possibly their life, depends on the generosity of a blood donor.
Despite the lifesaving need for blood in hospitals across our nation, only a small percentage of people donate blood annually. According to the American Association of Blood Banks:
- Each year, about 6.8 million people in the U.S. donate blood.
- 30% of all blood transfusions go to patients diagnosed with cancer or other blood diseases.
- While 38% of the population are eligible to donate blood, only approximately 10% of the people donate blood on a regular basis.
- Red blood cells must be used within 42 days (or less), and platelets must be used within just five days, meaning the need for donations represents a constant concern for healthcare organizations across the nation.
Together, we can help save lives in our hometown. Click here to find out if you are eligible to donate. Donors are invited to schedule a blood donation appointment. Walk-ins will also be welcomed throughout the event.
