EUG Airport Expansion Plans Take Flight

More than 100 business leaders, elected officials and regional partners attended the Eugene Airport‘s July 7 Expansion Showcase, where airport officials presented the Lift Off EUG initiative, a long-term vision for expanding one of the region’s most important economic assets.
The Eugene Airport has experienced remarkable growth over the past decade, more than doubling annual passenger traffic from approximately 800,000 travelers in 2011 to 1.8 million today. That success has created a new challenge: the airport has effectively reached capacity. To meet growing demand, airport leaders introduced the Lift Off EUG expansion initiative that will modernize facilities, add gates, improve passenger experience and position the airport to serve the region for decades to come.

For the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, the proposal represents much more than an airport construction project. It reflects the kind of strategic infrastructure investment that strengthens economic competitiveness, expands workforce opportunities and supports year-round economic development throughout our region.
Investing in Regional Competitiveness
Today, nearly a third of travelers from the Eugene Airport service area still drive to Portland to catch flights that aren’t available locally. The proposed expansion aims to reverse that trend by creating capacity for additional nonstop destinations while improving the overall passenger experience.
Plans include:
• Expansion of Concourse A
• Construction of a new eight-gate Concourse C, including charter capabilities
• Expanded ticketing facilities
• Modernized outbound baggage screening and handling
Those improvements would allow EUG to accommodate future growth while creating opportunities for additional airlines and new nonstop destinations.

Supporting Business Growth and Workforce Development
Infrastructure investments like these don’t simply move travelers, they broaden and strengthen economies. According to projections presented during the showcase, a fully expanded airport could support more than 23,000 regional jobs while generating approximately $3.6 billion in annual economic activity, more than doubling the airport’s current economic impact.
Those benefits extend well beyond aviation. A stronger airport improves access for employers recruiting talent from across the country. It makes the region more attractive to companies considering expansion or relocation. It supports suppliers, manufacturers, the area’s higher education institutions and countless other industries that depend on reliable transportation connections.

For a Chamber that has made workforce development and economic competitiveness central priorities, those investments align closely with the long-term needs of the Springfield business community.
Growing Tourism Beyond the Summer Season
The Chamber has also long advocated for investments that strengthen tourism as an economic driver. Visitors support hotels, restaurants, retailers, attractions, and recreation businesses throughout the region. Improved air access makes it easier to attract conferences, sporting events, and group travel; which, in turn, expand opportunities to bring visitors during “shoulder season” – the fall and winter months. This could alleviate seasonal fluctuations that many businesses experience.

Building for the Future
During the showcase, airport leaders emphasized that the airport already serves a five-county region encompassing Lane, Benton, Linn, Lincoln and Douglas counties, with approximately 71 percent of regional travelers choosing Eugene Airport over other options.
Demand is expected to continue growing over the coming decades, making expansion less a question of if than when. The proposed project represents an investment in infrastructure designed to keep pace with that growth while strengthening one of the region’s most important economic engines.
As the Springfield Chamber continues advocating for policies and investments that improve business competitiveness, strengthen the workforce, and expand economic opportunity, projects like Lift Off EUG illustrate how regional collaboration can help position our communities for long-term success.
