On Monday, May 26th, community members joined The American Legion Post #40 and the City of Springfield for the 76th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Veterans Plaza in Willamalane Park. The solemn gathering served as a powerful tribute to service members who gave their lives in defense of our nation.

The ceremony featured heartfelt tributes, traditional military honors, and reflections from civic and veteran leaders.

Mayor VanGordon read aloud the names of Springfield residents who lost their lives while serving in the military, a moment of solemn remembrance underscored by the traditional Battlefield Cross display and the playing of Taps.

Congresswoman Val Hoyle added a personal touch to the program by sharing a letter written by a family member who was killed in action during World War II. Her tribute reminded the audience of the deeply personal stories behind every name remembered and the generations of families impacted by war.

Additional speakers included American Legion Post #40 Commander Nick Gillaspie, and Lane County Commissioner and Navy Veteran David Loveall.

Ceremony participants included representatives from:

  • The American Legion Post #40
  • Willamette Leadership Academy
  • Springfield Elks Lodge #2145 & Elks Emblem Club
  • Summit Church of Springfield
  • Emerald Armory
  • Boy Scouts Troop 179
  • Willamalane Parks and Recreation District

The event concluded with the ceremonial folding of the American flag and a moment of silence, reminding all in attendance of the deep cost of freedom.
