Springfield Seeks Applicants for Interim Ward 4 City Councilor

The Springfield City Council approved a recruitment process to fill the Ward 4 vacancy.

Springfield residents who live in Ward 4 and are interested in serving as Interim Councilor may now submit applications. The appointment will fill the seat until the November 2026 statewide general election, when voters will elect someone to serve the remaining two years of the term through December 31, 2028.

Application period
Applications are being accepted from January 21, 2026 through February 20, 2026 at 5:00pm. Candidate application materials are available from the City Recorder in the City Manager’s Office, 225 Fifth Street, Springfield, Oregon, and online at: https://springfield-or.gov/city/mayor-and-city-council/

Selection timeline
February 20, 2026: Written applications due to City Manager’s Office
March 2, 2026: City Council Work Session to select candidates for interviews
April 6, 2026: Candidate interviews during Council Work Sessions
April 20, 2026: Council deliberation and vote at Regular Session meeting
April 27, 2026: Interim Councilor sworn in at Regular Session meeting

About Ward 4
Ward 4 encompasses a central-east portion of Springfield. Key landmarks in this ward include the Bob Keefer Center for Sports and Recreation, Agnes Stewart Middle School, Mt. Vernon Elementary, Maple Elementary, the Springfield DMV, Jerry’s Home Improvement Center, and the Walmart Supercenter.

About the Springfield City Council
Springfield’s Mayor and six Councilors make up the City’s legislative body. These volunteers serve four-year terms, setting policy, passing ordinances and resolutions, authorizing contracts, adopting the City’s budget, and appointing the City Manager, City Attorney, and advisory board members.

Council members also represent the City on various boards and commissions and participate in community events throughout the year.

Council Meetings
City Council meetings are open to the public and follow Oregon’s Public Meetings law (ORS Chapter 192). Meetings are typically held at Springfield City Hall as follows:

Work Sessions: 2nd and 4th Mondays at 5:30 p.m. (with additional sessions as needed on 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6:00 p.m.)
Regular Meetings: 1st and 3rd Mondays at 7:00 p.m. (moved to the next business day if a holiday falls on a Monday)

Council usually recesses for Spring Break, and during summer and winter holidays.
