Springfield Police Chief Andrew Shearer has formally announced his resignation, effective March 14, 2025. Since his appointment in 2021, Chief Shearer has played a pivotal role in leading the Springfield Police Department (SPD) through a period of significant growth, policy advancements, and strengthened community engagement.
Chief Shearer’s leadership has emphasized transparency, accountability, and collaboration, guiding the department through key initiatives that improved officer training, updated policies, and expanded opportunities for community engagement.
“Chief Shearer has been an outstanding leader for our department and community. His dedication to public safety, his ability to navigate complex challenges, and his commitment to strengthening relationships between the department and our community have been truly commendable. While we are sad to see him go, we are grateful for his service and wish him the very best in his next chapter.”
– Sean VanGordon, Mayor, City of Springfield
Prior to joining Springfield, Chief Shearer served 28 years with the Portland Police Bureau, retiring as Assistant Chief of Police before taking on the leadership role in Springfield. Over the past four years, he has worked to enhance SPD’s community trust, operational effectiveness, and internal culture, leaving a lasting impact on the department.
“Chief Shearer’s transformative leadership and professionalism has made a lasting difference at SPD,” said City Manager Nancy Newton. “His commitment to transparency, officer training, and community trust has helped move the department forward in meaningful ways. We deeply appreciate his thoughtful guidance, professionalism, and dedication to Springfield.”
Chief Shearer expressed gratitude for his time in Springfield and confidence in the department’s future.
“It has been an honor to serve as Chief of Police in Springfield and to work alongside the incredible men and women of the Springfield Police Department,” said Shearer. “Their dedication, courage, and commitment to public service inspire me every day. While I look forward to new professional opportunities and spending more time with family, I leave knowing that SPD is in capable hands and well-positioned to continue making a positive impact in this community.”
The City will announce next steps in the transition process in the coming weeks.
