Willamalane reinventing park and recreation programming amid COVID-19 restrictions

Willamalane continues to reinvent what park and recreation programming looks like amid COVID-19 restrictions. To continue enriching the lives of the Springfield community, Willamalane announced restructured programs and facilities today.
Willamalane Adult Activity Center
On Monday, July 13, Willamalane Adult Activity Center will reopen in a limited capacity to host much-needed wellness programs and supportive services for the Springfield community. Some of these programs will be located in Willamalane Adult Activity Center meeting spaces beginning July 13.
While rooms in the activity center will be used for registerable programs, the lobby will remain closed to drop-ins, casual gatherings, and social programs. Seniors and vulnerable populations at risk for severe complications from COVID-19 are still recommended to stay home when possible. Willamalane Adult Activity Center is located at 215 W. C St. in Springfield.
Esports Club
Willamalane’s new Esports Club aims to build a friendly, all-ages community of gamers to learn, develop skills, form teams, and compete together. This virtual opportunity provides an all-new avenue for the gaming community to convene.
“There’s never been a better time to be a gamer,” said Trevor Fahlman, Athletics Coordinator at Willamalane. “This league is an opportunity to build friendships, develop teamwork and decision making skills, and even earn collegiate scholarships and careers.” Interested community members can sign up for a free Esports Club membership atwillamalane.org/esports.
Summer movies and concerts in the park
Sounds Like Summer kicked off on Wednesday, July 8, with more movies and concerts scheduled throughout the month. Attendees can sit in sectioned “pods” of grass sized for groups of four. Pods are spaced six feet apart to adhere to physical distancing guidelines.
The family-friendly movies and concerts in the park are filling up quickly, but some spots do remain. Willamalane plans to live-stream the concert on Wednesday for those who cannot attend. Updates and information will be posted to willamalane.org/soundslikesummer.
