Shana’s Trail FAQs

What is Shana’s Trail?

A new running trail is open at Willamalane Park, 1276 G St. in Springfield. The 800-meter (half-mile) aggregate and bark running trail honors Shana Thomas Barr, a former Springfield High School track athlete. The trail has been made possible, in part, by a family foundation grant from the Shana Thomas Barr Memorial Fund.

Starting at the parking lot at the east end of Willamalane Park Swim Center, Shana’s Trail forms a loop along Mohawk Blvd., I Street, Silke Field, and the swale behind the pool. Shana’s Trail is composed of the same specially applied aggregate and bark that makes Pre’s Trail a popular destination for runners.

How was the project funded?

This project received financial or in-kind contributions from McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center, the Wildish Companies, Rexius Forest Products, Willamalane, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, SUB, the City of Springfield, and the Springfield School District. The Springfield Rotary Club made this their 2021 signature project. The project also used carry-over contributions from the Springfield Educational Foundation, which has served as a conduit for Shana’s memorial funds that were first established 11 years ago.

What’s next for Willamalane Park?

Willamalane is developing a master plan for the future of Willamalane Park. Three concepts are designed and available for public feedback. These concepts include possibilities for a new outdoor aquatic facility, a bike pump track, a new signature play area, and more. The community is invited to view the concepts, join Willamalane for a public meeting, and give feedback. Learn more at willamalane.org/WillamalanePark.
