Greenhill Receives Grant to Expand Disaster Response Program for Animals
The shelter is looking for donations to purchase additional equipment and supplies
Thanks to a grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), Greenhill Humane Society was able to purchase a disaster response vehicle and equipment trailer. The new vehicle and trailer will be used to expand Greenhill’s ability to respond to disasters impacting people with pets in Lane County. Greenhill is looking to raise funds to stock the trailer with crates, food and water dishes, and other equipment and supplies that will be used during the 2024 disaster response season.
“Over the past three years, Greenhill has provided shelter and support for people and pets impacted by local wildfires and severe weather. Lane County covers nearly 5,000 square miles. We needed a way to transport supplies for a remote shelter for people and pets evacuating from wildfires. The vehicle and trailer will also help us in the distribution of pet food and supplies during recovery efforts. We are tremendously thankful for the ASPCA and for the local businesses who made this possible.”
– Cary Lieberman, Executive Director, Greenhill Humane Society
Brian and Mindy Hough, owners of Cascade Truck Body and Trailer Sales in Eugene, Oregon helped coordinate the project. They worked with Brad’s Cottage Grove Chevrolet, Cargo Mate, and Harris Design and Print that provided an eye-catching vehicle wrap.
Greenhill partners with local and state agencies to assist with disaster response coordination, animal care, sheltering, lost and found activities, and evacuation. During the Holiday Farm Fire in 2020, Greenhill provided disaster response coordination, animal sheltering, and animal search and rescue. In 2021, Greenhill sheltered pets at the Lane County Fairgrounds cooling center and provided pet shelter for evacuees of the Middle Fork Complex Fires. In 2022, Greenhill sheltered over 140 pets for people who evacuated the Cedar Creek Fire. This year, Greenhill assisted in the sheltering of people and pets who were evacuated from the Bedrock and Lookout fires. In addition to disaster response, throughout the year, Greenhill distributes pet food and supplies to low-income individuals and other organizations who help people throughout Lane County.
Greenhill still needs additional supplies and equipment to stock the disaster response trailer. Greenhill is raising funds to purchase heavy duty collapsible crates, food and water dishes, and other equipment. Donations can be made on-line at green-hill.org or by mailing a check to 88530 Green Hill Road, Eugene, OR 97402. Donors should note “disaster response” in the memo.
