Career Exploration Online Student Resource
The Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce recently launched an online, interactive resource for students looking to explore local career opportunities and industries.
How can your organization participate?
This resource is designed to give students a full picture of the different industries, organizations, and jobs in the Springfield/Eugene Area. As students develop their individual career pathways, your information on jobs, training, education, pay, and more will help them make informed decisions about their future. You can participate in this resource by filling out the company profile form, which will be added to the online resource page.
What advice are employers giving students about working in their industry?
Alvord Taylor: We serve over 60 people with disabilities in the Eugene-Springfield area. Our main areas of focus are facilitating independence and personal opportunity. We believe in genuine community involvement for the people we support and increasing community awareness of the abilities of the people we support. Someone looking at working in our industry must be flexible in their availability, wanting to help others achieve life goals and independence, and have a positive attitude.
Chambers Construction: In the construction industry, it’s about being able to work well with others and problem-solve. The more proactive you are in taking advantage of training opportunities, and to work on different projects, the more likely you are to advance in your career. There are several career pathways within the construction industry from being a carpenter, to being a superintendent or project manager, as well as support functions like estimating, accounting, contract administration, marketing, and more.
Hansen Insurance Company: If you want to work in any service industry (where you take care of people) remember that it is NOT about you making money. You are there to serve others to the best of your abilities. If you put the needs of your customers first, success will follow. Be open to learning new things and asking questions. None of us know everything. Asking for help is a strength.
Eugene Magazine: Write as much as you can, read as much as you can, find your voice and figure out what you want out of a publications position
Johnson Crushers International: Take every opportunity to engage in hands on learning, math is important, understand the importance of safety in the workplace.
Kernutt Stokes: This is a great industry, especially for people who like to problem solve, tackling challenges, helping others succeed, and can get hands-on training to build a successful career.
McDonald Wholesale: Many companies have lost their in person touch with customer service. If looking for an employer who is as invested in their employees as they are their customers – give us a call!!
Oregon Medical Group: There are many ways to get involved in the healthcare field to positively impact patient care, from actually becoming a doctor, to being in-clinic support or other support staff, there are many ways to utilize your talents in a way that contributes to the productivity of the organization, and thus the health and wellbeing of others. Find your strengths and interests, and continue to learn and grow in those areas.
SELCO Community Credit Union: Be open-minded as exploring different opportunities and discovering your passion. The credit union industry is filled with people who desire to help others and a desire to be of service is the top trait we seek in new team members.
Straightline RV & Boat: Be eager to learn! Attitude comes first, we can teach you the rest! Be honest about your qualifications and consistent in attendance/showing up on time. A little integrity goes a long ways!
Umpqua Bank: Be committed to whatever work you are doing, including school and volunteerism. Treat yourself and others in a respectful manner. Go out of your way to help others in your community. Know that we all started somewhere, and it wasn’t always glamorous, but success can be achieved by anyone who is willing to grow their skills.
What’s to come?
We know your organization probably hires for many job positions. Wood products manufacturing organizations also hire accountants. Healthcare organizations also hire HR professionals. Look for more information coming soon on uploading 1 minute videos where your employees can share what it’s like working in their field. Organizations will also have the opportunity to submit a video version of their company profile.
